1762

The birth of the brand

The story of Marquis de Terme began in 1762, when Mademoiselle Ledoux d’Emplet married François de Peguilhan Marquis de Terme, giving her the estate that would henceforth bear her name.

1789

The Feuillerat footprint

After the French Revolution, several families succeeded one another. However, only one family had a profound impact on the history of Marquis de Terme: for over 120 years, the Feuillerat family managed the estate before becoming its owners. Thus, 3 generations succeeded one another, constantly improving the estate’s wines. Thomas Jefferson, on his way to becoming the 3rd President of the United States, spent a long time in France, where he was ambassador from 1785 to 1789. He also worked as a wine broker, writing travel diaries of the great French wine regions. In 1787, he visited Château Marquis de Terme and ranked it among the 16 best wines he tasted.

1855

The excellence of a Grand Cru Classé

Napoleon III decides to organize a world’s fair in Paris, and official committees are tasked with selecting products and works of art for display. To showcase Bordeaux wines, a classification was requested. This is how Marquis de Terme joined the circle of Grands Crus Classés 1855.

1935

The Sénéclauze passion

Pierre Sénéclauze bought the property and passed it on to his sons, Pierre-Louis, Philippe and Jean, the current owners.

2009

A new, forward-looking era

The owners appoint Ludovic David to manage Château Marquis de Terme. This change marked the start of a new era for the estate. Numerous innovations and a new dynamism are introduced to enhance the exceptional terroir of Marquis de Terme wines.

The birth of a new cuvée: Marquis de Terme Cuvée 1762

“The birth of a new cuvée takes place in the effervescence, curiosity and emotion of creation. With the 2018 vintage, my team and I wanted to give new meaning to our blending choices, a search for balance between subtlety and suppleness to create Cuvée 1762. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot find here, on our deep gravel terroir, a blossoming of great distinction.

This cuvée proudly assumes its Margaux character. For historic terroirs, there is no second best, no smallest, only wines with strong, clear entities, witness to the soil, history and our choices as men. The spirit of this selection is to develop a tactile wine, bursting with fruit and fullness.

Cuvée 1762 is one of the estate’s benchmark wines, reflecting its timelessness.

Winemakers' secrets

Ludovic David joined Château Marquis de Terme as General Manager in 2009. An oenologist originally from Cherbourg, he succeeds Jean-Pierre Hugon, who stayed on for 36 years. His ambition? Bring the estate into the 3rd millennium and open it up to wine tourism and international markets. To achieve this, he rolled up his sleeves and launched a far-reaching policy. On the agenda: uprooting, replanting, redevelopment, opening of the château… Today, Marquis de Terme is more world-oriented than ever.

A terroir with character

Located in the heart of the village of Margaux-Cantenac, Marquis de Terme lives up to its reputation as a Grand Cru Classé. Situated on a central plateau, its 40 hectares of Margaux’s typical gravelly soil are planted with the noble grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, which have made the international reputation of Médoc wines. When one thinks of Margaux and its terroir, the first words that come to mind are elegance, finesse and delicacy. In fact, the appellation boasts the largest number of Grands Crus Classés, including Château Marquis de Terme.

OUR TEAM

The Marquis de Terme teams are fully committed to excellence. Bold, creative and rigorous, these men and women are passionately committed to cultivating the Marquis de Terme spirit every day.
